While summertime can be a great time to show some skin, some people feel self-conscious with too much hair on their bodies. Traditional hair removal methods like shaving and waxing can usually work, but they take a lot of effort and constant upkeep. Laser hair removal is an easier solution enjoyed by patients at our med spa in Vero Beach.

Curious to know if this beauty treatment is right for you? Here are the basics you need to know about the procedure.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser hair removal device seeks out the pigment in your skin. Most pigment is typically found at the base of your hair follicle, leading the laser to target the root. When the laser converts light energy to heat and aims it at the hair follicle, the root dies and the hair falls out. Once a hair follicle root is dead, it is permanently removed and won’t come back.

How should you prepare for laser hair removal?

Before your appointment, refrain from other hair removal treatments such as shaving, plucking, waxing, or tweezing. You want the root of your hair follicles to be as visible as possible so the laser can successfully detect them. You should also heavily reduce your sun exposure in the weeks leading up to treatment. Wear plenty of sunscreen when outdoors and avoid both natural tanning and fake tanning products.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Laser hair removal is not a painful treatment, but the sensation can feel a bit unusual. Many patients compare the feeling to a small rubber band being quickly snapped against the skin. For patients who are especially sensitive, we offer numbing agents such as topical anesthesia. In addition, most lasers used today are technologically advanced, using built-in pain-reducing methods such as contact cooling.

Are there any side effects after treatment?

You may experience a little redness or tenderness in the target area after treatment. You may also notice small black “specks” coming out of your skin, which is the dead hair naturally shedding and falling out. Other less common, unwanted side effects include blisters, scabbing, and hyperpigmentation. If you’re predisposed to hyperpigmentation, try using anti-inflammation creams on your skin before coming in for treatment.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Any follicles successfully targeted during laser hair removal are permanently destroyed and will not grow back. However, our bodies develop new hair follicles over time, and you may need additional maintenance after 1 to 2 years. Any hair that grows back after this period is often thinner and lighter.
