What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable products that temporarily correct certain signs of aging and enhance facial features such as the lips and cheeks. All JUVÉDERM fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA), a water-storing molecule that occurs naturally in our bodies. HA helps hydrate the skin and keep it looking plump and youthful.

Common Treatment Areas

Today’s remarkable assortment of specialized fillers enables our nurse injectors to effectively address specific cosmetic concerns and create long-lasting, natural-looking results. Commonly treated areas include:

  • Lips (to plump and define; fill vertical lip lines)
  • Under eye hollows (tear trough) that can look like dark circles
  • Laugh lines or smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Cheeks and brows (restore lost volume)
  • Chin and Jawline
Dermal fillers treatment areas include the temples, cheekbones, nasolabial folds, upper & lower lips, lip lines, and secondary smile lines

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) therapy is another option to consider for addressing many of the same concerns. Our injectors take a holistic approach to filler injections, creating balanced, seamless results that enhance your face while preserving its character.

For some patients, our nurse injectors may recommend Restylane® dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is also the active ingredient for Restylane fillers, but their formulations are slightly different than that of JUVÉDERM fillers.

How They Work

In the past, anti-aging treatments focused only on the skin’s surface, but aesthetic specialists realized the loss of tissue supporting the skin also contributed to an older appearance. Fillers soften wrinkles and fine lines by filling them out from within the skin. They can also restore volume where it is lost over time in areas like the cheeks, temples, tear troughs, and under the eyes.

Restoring volume to certain areas of the face can erase years from your appearance without the downtime and inconvenience of more invasive procedures. The specialization of FDA-approved fillers has made these treatments even more effective and long-lasting.

What Are the Different Types of JUVÉDERM Fillers?

The injectable gel fillers we use at White Orchid Spa include:

JUVÉDERM XC/JUVÉDERM VOLLURE®: Both fillers soften moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and the mouth. VOLLURE is an advanced formulation that produces results that can last up to 18 months.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC: A breakthrough product that was the first hyaluronic acid filler approved by the FDA specifically for restoring lost volume in the cheeks. Injected deeper into the skin than other fillers, VOLUMA is approved by the FDA to last up to 2 years.

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC: Lip enhancement with fillers can look subtle yet sensuous when performed with VOLBELLA. This filler adds definition and fullness without appearing “inflated.” It also minimizes the appearance of vertical lip lines.

JUVÉDERM VOLUX® XC: The first filler approved by the FDA to restore definition to the jawline, VOLUX creates an attractive, angular appearance that both women and men desire.

Can Fillers Be Combined With BOTOX or Other Treatments?

Yes, different fillers can be used together and combined with other treatments, including BOTOX® Cosmetic, to treat multiple areas of the face. Some people also combine filler injections with other cosmetic procedures, such as microblading, a treatment that enhances the eyebrows. Our nurse injectors can discuss your specific concerns and create a personalized treatment plan to address your needs.

Can Fillers Be Used as a Nonsurgical Alternative to Facelift Surgery?

Yes. A personalized combination of injectables, sometimes called a “liquid face lift,” can help patients with early to moderate signs of aging look refreshed and rejuvenated without surgery. We use dermal fillers to restore volume where it’s needed such as in the cheeks, temples, and brows and BOTOX injections to relax lines and creases in the face and banding on the neck. Benefits of this approach over surgery include:

  • Minimally invasive
  • More affordable
  • Immediate results
  • No anesthesia or downtime

What to Expect

When you arrive for your treatment session, our staff will immediately ensure you’re comfortable and answer any questions you may have. The procedure occurs in our discreet treatment room and may take between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the treatment plan created by your injector. All JUVÉDERM fillers are pre-mixed with lidocaine, a local anesthetic that helps you remain comfortable during the injections. You can also request that a topical numbing cream be applied before the procedure if desired.

Your nurse injector gently eases the product under the skin using a microcannula–a more delicate technique that minimizes bruising or bleeding.

How Many JUVÉDERM Syringes Do I Need?

When discussing the amount of JUVÉDERM filler needed during a treatment, we talk about the number of syringes used. The number of syringes an injector administers during each treatment depends on your age and your concerns. Most patients need at least 1 or 2 syringes injected to accomplish their goals. Some patients, however, may require 3 or 4 syringes to achieve full correction. For patient comfort, only one syringe is used at a time. Our injectors create a treatment plan after meeting with patients, evaluating their skin or lips, and discussing their goals.

How To Sleep After Dermal Fillers

Sleeping in the correct position the first 48 to 72 hours after getting facial fillers can help ensure optimal results. It’s essential not to apply pressure to the treatment area during the initial couple of days after filler injections. That includes while you sleep, so we recommend sleeping on your back with your head elevated on 2 pillows. It helps to prop pillows on either side of your head so you don’t roll onto your side while you’re asleep.

What To Avoid After Fillers

While there’s no need for downtime after filler treatments, it’s important to follow these restrictions for optimal results:

  • Avoid rubbing or putting pressure on the treated areas for several hours.
  • Do not apply makeup or skincare products for the first 24 hours.
  • Hold off on vigorous exercise, saunas, sunbathing, and other activities that can dilate your blood vessels for 2 days.
  • Abstain from drinking alchohol and eating spicy food for the first 2 days.

If you have questions or concerns about what you should and should not do, please feel free to contact us.

Your Results

Filler injections produce results immediately, which is one of the reasons they are so popular. Our nurse injectors provide instructions for post-injection care, such as applying cool compresses to red or swollen areas.

How Long Do Fillers Last?

Depending on the specific filler used, where it’s injected, and individual factors, expect your filler results to last approximately:

  • Lips: up to 1 year
  • Lines, folds, and creases: up to 18 months
  • Cheeks and brows: up to 2 years
  • Chin: up to 1 year

Can You Get JUVÉDERM Lip Fillers While Pregnant?

Researchers haven’t studied the safety of getting lip fillers—or fillers in other areas of the face—while pregnant. Because conclusive studies don’t exist, there is no way to know for sure if lip fillers are safe for someone who’s pregnant. Anything you put in your body while pregnant may affect the unborn baby. At White Orchid Spa, no injectable services are performed on guests who are expecting or actively breastfeeding.

Common Questions About Dermal Fillers

Are dermal fillers safe?

Yes, JUVÉDERM fillers are FDA approved and very safe in the hands of a skilled injector. They have been used for nonsurgical cosmetic enhancement for years.

Is BOTOX or JUVÉDERM better?

The best choice depends on the concerns you’d like to address. These products are used for different reasons, so one is not better than the other. BOTOX is best for correcting lines and wrinkles caused by the contractions of facial muscles such as frown lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet around the outer corners of the eyes. Dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM add and restore volume, smooth out static wrinkles, and sculpt the lips.

Will anyone be able to tell I’ve had dermal fillers?

Our skilled, well-trained injectors believe injectables should not be detectable. That’s the approach they take when performing filler treatments. Their goal is to enhance your natural beauty without any telltale signs of “having work done.”

How do I know how much filler I’ll need?

During your consultation, our injectors will talk with you about your treatment and determine how much filler should be used. Each patient has their own needs and cosmetic goals, so it’s best to come in for an evaluation.

What’s better, a lip flip or lip fillers?

The lips can be enhanced with different types of injections; the best one for you depends on your cosmetic goals and unique needs. Filler injections increase lip volume instantly to plump up the lips and add definition to the edges. A BOTOX “lip flip” gives the appearance of a fuller upper lip by exposing more of the red lip vermillion. A lip flip takes a few days to begin with final results reached in about 10 to 14 days.

Will I be able to kiss after getting lip fillers?

Certainly, though you’ll likely want to wait until any swelling in your lips subsides, which takes about 24 to 48 hours.

Are dermal fillers painful?

We take care to minimize any discomfort when performing filler injections by:

  • Offering topical numbing cream before the treatment.
  • Using fillers that contain numbing medication (lidocaine).
  • Making the injections with very small needles called microcannulas.
