Platelet-rich fibrin is a substance collected from the blood that is similar to PRP. Platelets in the blood are rich in growth factors that increase the production of collagen and elastin. While PRP contains mostly platelets, PRF contains a higher concentration of platelets along with white blood cells and stem cells. Fibrin is created by the body to hold platelets around an injury. When PRF is injected into an area of the face, it begins a controlled inflammatory response that generates new cells, collagen, and elastin.

Request an AppointmentBoth PRP and PRF are created by spinning a sample of the patient’s blood in a centrifuge. PRF requires less blood than PRP because more of the blood is used (less is discarded). The centrifuge is spun slower for PRF, which minimizes damage to the platelets. PRF contains a greater concentration of white blood cells, stem cells, and platelets than PRP. PRF naturally forms (coagulates) into a gel that adds volume when injected and is absorbed more slowly than PRP.
PRF has similar uses as PRP, but PRF releases growth factors for much longer, improving long-term benefits. Because creating PRF does not require as much centrifugal force as PRP, the platelets are thought to be more robust than those in PRP, which leads to quicker results. We also use PRF for hair restoration at our med spa.

Learn MoreThe PRF procedure is similar to PRP therapy. First, a nurse practitioner collects a small amount of blood from your arm; less is needed than with PRP. The collection tube is placed into an FDA-approved centrifuge to spin the blood and separate the PRF from the rest of the blood. The prepared PRF is immediately ready for injection into the face or for use with microneedling. The procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes. While no downtime is needed, expect temporary swelling in treated areas.
Results typically begin to emerge 3 to 4 weeks after the procedure and continue to improve with time. We generally recommend 3 to 4 treatment sessions, spaced 1 to 2 months apart, for optimal results.
