Summer-Safe Skincare

White Orchid Spa

Though Florida provides us warm weather year-round, during the summer months we can see higher temperatures, longer daylight hours, and an increase in the amount of UV rays we’re exposed to. We find ourselves spending our days on the boat, riding our bikes with the kids, and enjoying hours floating in the pool. Just as the environment and our lifestyle changes with the season, we should also adjust our skincare routine as well. Here are some of our recommendations:

Sunscreen.

Though we recommend sunscreen year-round to protect against the skin aging UVA rays, we especially emphasize wearing sunscreen during the summer months to protect against damaging UVB rays.  Unlike UVA rays, UVB rays are much more prevalent in the summer months and they are the rays that are directly responsible for sunburns, skin discoloration, and visible changes to the skin’s surface. Don’t just apply sunscreen, but be sure to reapply at least once every two hours when out in the sun.

Consider a lighter moisturizer.

Richer creams are nice and soothing during the drier winter months, but they may be too heavy for the heat and humidity in the summer. Consider swapping to a light-weight hydrator (like SkinMedica’s HA5) or use a hydrating SPF that can act as both your sunscreen and your moisturizer all in one (Image Hydrating SPF).

Add in Vitamin C.

Not only does Vitamin C help stimulate collagen and elastin production, but it can help protect the skin from damaging free radicals and minimize the appearance of pigmented spots. Though Vitamin C can be used year-round, the summer months are a great time to incorporate it into your routine to combat damage from the sun.

Buff away dry skin.

Exfoliation is an important step in all skin care routines, but it is especially important during the summer months. Using an exfoliator helps clear away dead skin cells, dirt, and sweat that can result in excess oil, clogged pores, and dull-looking skin. Exfoliating 3 nights a week can buff away dead skill cells and debris buildup and can uncover healthy glowing skin.

Don’t forget about your body.

A lot of us focus on protecting our faces during the summer months but be sure to not forget about the rest of your body. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen all over, including the tops of your ears, feet, and scalp. Stay in the shade.  Wear a lip balm with SPF. Shower and moisturize immediately after a long day at the pool. And most importantly: keep yourself well hydrated!

Switch up your medical-grade skincare treatments.

One of our safer medical-grade skincare treatments is microneedling. Microneedling is great for improving uneven skin tone, softening fine lines and wrinkles, reducing acne scarring, firming loose skin, and lightening sun damage. Though it is safe during the summer months, we do ask that you stay out of the sun for at least 3 days prior to your treatment and the treatment cannot be performed on sunburned skin.

Special Savings

For the month of July, we’re offering $50 off a microneedling session or $150 off a microneedling session with PRP (PRP is a great boost to your treatment using your body’s natural growth factors).  If you’d like to learn more or find out if you’re a candidate for this treatment, please call to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our Nurse Practitioners.
