BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers are two of the most popular nonsurgical treatments for refreshing your appearance, but what happens after your appointment matters just as much as the treatment itself. Both treatments require little to no downtime, but their post-treatment care differs in a few important ways. Understanding what to do—and what not to do—helps you protect your results.
What To Expect After BOTOX and Fillers
Both BOTOX and dermal fillers are quick, in-office treatments performed by expert nurse injectors at White Orchid Spa.
Right after your appointment, you may notice mild redness, slight swelling, or tenderness at the injection sites. This is completely normal and typically resolves within a few hours to a day. Most of our guests return to their usual activities the same day, which is part of what makes these treatments so appealing.
That said, the first 24 hours are important. Giving your body a little time to settle allows the product to integrate properly and helps minimize unnecessary swelling or irritation. A good rule of thumb is to take it easy, stay hydrated, and avoid anything that generates excessive heat or pressure on the treated areas.
What Not To Do After BOTOX
BOTOX works by relaxing targeted facial muscles, so the goal after treatment is to keep the product precisely where it was placed. For the first several hours, you’ll want to remain upright. Lying flat too soon can increase the risk of migration, potentially affecting your results.
You should also avoid rubbing or massaging your face, even when cleansing or applying skincare products. It may be tempting to check the treated areas, but less is more during this time. You should also skip working out for the rest of the day because increased blood flow can interfere with how BOTOX settles into the muscle.
It’s generally okay to fly if you wait a few hours after treatment before heading to the airport. As for makeup, you can typically apply it later the same day, as long as you do so gently without pressing or dragging the skin.
What Not To Do After Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers, including JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, work differently. Instead of relaxing muscles, they restore volume and contours, so aftercare focuses on minimizing swelling and allowing the product to settle evenly.
As with BOTOX, it’s best to avoid strenuous workouts for at least 24 to 48 hours. Increased circulation can contribute to swelling, especially in delicate areas like the lips or under the eyes. You’ll also want to avoid heat—think saunas, hot yoga, or prolonged sun exposure—as this can intensify inflammation.
Sleeping position matters more than many people expect. For the first night, resting on your back helps prevent pressure on newly treated areas, particularly if you’ve had filler in the cheeks, lips, or jawline. Similar to BOTOX, you should avoid touching or massaging the area unless specifically instructed to do so.
Makeup can usually be applied the next day, or sooner with a very light touch. And while flying isn’t off-limits, it’s best to schedule filler treatments at least a day before getting on an airplane.
Key Aftercare Differences To Keep in Mind
While both treatments are low maintenance, their aftercare priorities differ:
- BOTOX focuses on preventing product migration
- Fillers focus on reducing swelling and protecting shape
This is why personalized guidance matters. One of our nurse injectors may adjust instructions based on the treatment area, product used, and your unique goals.
Why Aftercare Makes a Difference
While both treatments are quick and convenient, aftercare is what helps refine and protect your results. Think of it as the final step in your treatment plan.
Following post-treatment instructions enhances your results and reduces the likelihood of bruising or prolonged swelling. At White Orchid Spa, we design every treatment detail with your experience in mind, from the moment you arrive to the way your results unfold in the days that follow. Aftercare guidelines are another way we help you feel confident in your care.
