What causes melasma? What are the symptoms? Is it harmful? Can it be treated? Melasma is a common skin condition that often appears as brown or blue-gray patches or freckle-like spots. The skin discoloration occurs when your body overproduces cells that give the skin its color, called melanin.

How Common Is Melasma?

Melasma is a common type of hyperpigmentation, which describes any condition in which the body produces too much melanin. The pigmentation most often occurs in the center of the face and on the cheeks, forehead, temples, upper lip, and nose. Sometimes people have the patches only on the sides of the face. Rarely, melasma appears on the forearms. The patches do not itch or hurt and are only of cosmetic concern.
